Call your local quarry with the tons needed figure — that's how quarries sell material. Round up to the nearest half-ton. Always add 10% for waste and settling. Ask about minimum delivery loads (most quarries require 10–15 tons minimum for delivery; smaller orders may require pickup or premium delivery charges).
Volume (cubic yards) tells you how much space the gravel occupies. Weight (tons) is what you pay for and what your delivery truck carries. The conversion depends on material density — that's why the calculator uses different density values for different materials. Crusher run is denser than pea gravel, so the same volume weighs more. Always order by the ton from the quarry, not by the yard.
The cost estimate is based on the delivered price per ton you enter. Actual prices vary significantly by region and haul distance from the quarry. The national average for delivered crusher run is $22–$36/ton. In remote areas or areas with limited quarry access, $40–$55/ton is possible. Call 2–3 local quarries for quotes before committing to an order.
The calculator estimates material before compaction. Crusher run and road base typically compact down 15–25% from loose volume. The tons figure already accounts for this — you're ordering enough material to achieve your target compacted depth.
